Chasing the Megahertz Unicorns (grid squares): My VHF Contesting Journey and 2025 Goals
Winning the division award in the January VHF contest has truly inspired me to take my passion to the next level! I have to admit—I’m definitely “positive” for VHF contesting addiction. But don’t worry, I’m not looking for a cure. In fact, I’m looking for your help to spread the excitement!
A Shout-Out to My Mentor
For full disclosure, the VHF contesting bug was passed to me by Randy, N0LD. After riding along with him on a few rover adventures, I was hooked. I decided I wanted to construct my own rover—because, let’s be honest, engineering and building is half the fun!
Below are some of the VHF certificates I’ve received. I’m not bragging—many people have done MUCH, MUCH better—but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, thanks to the mentoring and encouragement from N0LD.
Empowering Technicians: Beyond the Repeater
In 2025, I want to encourage Technician licensees to dive deeper into the world of radio. Many hams get comfortable using repeaters, but there’s a whole world waiting on 146.52 MHz simplex. Not only does this help during contests (while I’m chasing those elusive Megahertz Unicorns!), but it also builds essential skills and troubleshooting memories.
I’ve noticed that when a repeater goes down or a situation calls for simplex operation, many operators aren’t sure how to switch over. Practicing simplex operation isn’t just about contest points—it’s about being prepared, building confidence, and unlocking new possibilities. My hope is that this hands-on experience will inspire more Technicians to keep learning, experimenting, and maybe even start studying for their General license. Imagine the doors that open when you start exploring HF, 6 meters, and beyond! Or possibly remain a Technician but start exploring satellites, VHF rovering, meteors and one day even EME.
Making Waves in 2025: My Plans
Here’s what I’m aiming for this year:
- Rovering to New Locations: I plan to hit the road and activate new grid squares, bringing VHF activity to places that don’t see much contesting action.
- Club Outreach: I’ll be reaching out to local clubs and encouraging them to mentor their members—especially new hams—on how to monitor VHF simplex, especially during the ARRL VHF contest weekends.
- Building Skills: Whether it’s helping someone find their Maidenhead grid square, switch from memory mode to VFO, or just make their first simplex contact, I want to be there to support and encourage.
- Attend the 2025 Central States VHF conference in Lincoln NE https://www.csvhfs.org/
Join the Adventure!
If you’re a Technician, I challenge you: Add the ARRL contests to your calendar as a goal to be prepared to monitor and talk on simplex. Start monitoring 146.52 MHz simplex. Make a contact. Ask questions. If you’re an experienced ham, reach out to someone new and share what you know. Let’s build a stronger, more confident VHF community—one contact at a time.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll catch the VHF contesting bug, too. And if you do, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Let’s make 2025 a year of learning, connecting, and chasing those Megahertz Unicorns together. See you on the air! VHF Activity weekend dates to be on the radio: https://contests.arrl.org/
